Stray Animals
Dogs:
If you live in Washburn County, here is what you can do if you find a stray dog and have been unable to determine who the dog belongs to.
If the dog has a Washburn County dog license tag, the Washburn County sheriff's Department can look up the owner. Get the number and give them a call. The dog might live close by.
If there are no tags, law enforcement can guide you on what to do next, whether that is having them pick the dog up or having you drop the dog off at the shelter. The shelter does not pick up stray animals. You can call the shelter to see if someone has reported a lost dog to us. You can also message us on our Facebook page with a photo and location and we will post: fb.com/WashburnAreaHumaneSociety.
Strays are held for four days. If they are not reclaimed at the end of four days, they will be put up for adoption. There is a $50 fee to reclaim your pet and $25 per night fee up to 4 nights.

WCAHS shelter: 715.635.4720
Cats:
The shelter can only take stray cats or kittens based on kennel availability. The cat must be a stray found in Washburn County. If you find a stray cat, you can call the shelter and give them any tag number, license number or any other information such as sex, color, etc. If the shelter indicates you can bring the cat in, then go ahead and bring the cat in. If there is no available kennel, we can put your name on a waiting list for the cat to come into the shelter.
